Zinnia

Zinnia is one of 20 S of the annual and perennial plants of Asteraceae, originating in the dry meadows in a zone extending from America of south-west in Mexico but more especially South America. They are remarkable by their long flowered stems and their variety of colors.

The sheets of the Zinnia are opposed and often without stalks, their form going of a linear form with oval. The flowers have appearances very varied and can present only one line of petals or in the shape of dome. They have white colors, yellow, orange, red, purple and lilac.

The Zinnias are popular flowers of garden. They are resown spontaneously each year. More than 100 cultivars were produced since their setting in culture at the XIXe century.

The Zinnias particularly attract the butterflies and of many gardeners the plants especially to attract them.

Off the genus derived from the German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727-1759).
