Ziggy Elman

Ziggy Elman (Harry Finkelman) is a Trompettiste of American Jazz born the May 26th 1914 with Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) and deceased the June 26th 1968 with Van Nuys (California).

Ziggy Elman also sometimes practiced and recorded music Klezmer.

Biography

Born in Philadelphia, Ziggy Elman, its childhood passes to Atlantic City. It begins its career like Tromboniste in the orchestra of Alex Bartha. From 1935 to 1940, he is trumpet player in the Big band of Benny Goodman. He is one of the musicians high-speed motorboats of the orchestra (he is for example the soloist on one of the tubes of the formation: “And The Angels Sing”). During its stay at Goodman, it records also a score of faces as leader - under the name “Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra” - for the label “Bluebird”. After his departure from Goodman, one finds it a time at Joe Venuti, then, in 1943, in the orchestra of Tommy Dorsey. During the Second world war, he plays in a military dance band. From 1946 to 1947, he works again at Dorsey. He settles then in the area of Los Angeles where he directs the orchestra which animates “Ballroom Palladium”. From July 1947 to 1951, one finds it, once more, at Dorsey. From this date, he works primarily as musician of studio in California.

A little forgotten today, Ziggy Elman was very popular in its time. He was “better trumpet player of the year” by the readers of the review “ Downbeat ” in 1940,1941,1943,1944,1945 and 1947.

For the anecdote, one can see it in film of 1955 “ The Benny Goodman story ” (where patient it is made double with the trumpet by Manny Klein). It was also the high-speed motorboat of a short film in 1951, “ Ziggy Elman' S Orchestra and the Sportsmen ”.
