The name

The name " Azande" mean the people which have much ground, and refers to their history as conquerors and warriors. There are many variable orthographies of Azande, including: Zande, Zandeh, A-Zandeh, Sandeh, etc the name Niam-Niam (or Nyam-Nyam) were frequently employed by foreigners to refer to Azande in 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This name is probably of origin Dinka, and means big eaters in this language (it is perhaps an onomatopoeia), referring supposedly to propensities cannibalistic. This name for Azande was in service by other tribes with the Sudan, and later adopted by Westerners. Naturally, today the name Niam-Niam is regarded as pejorative, and should not be employed.

Niam-Niam can also refer to a play of Mancala with a 2×8 and stores.

In Sudan of today, they are, in many case, victims of the dictatorship of Sudan. It is because of a civil war, which lasts since a few tens of years.
