A hotel is an establishment offering a service of paying lodging, generally for short periods. History

The word “hotel” referred to the private mansion formerly, a French concept with vocation other than the offer of lodging. Today, the English word “hotel” and its equivalent “hotel” have the same significance, and the expression “Private mansion” is used to refer to the old French concept. The French orthography with the circumflex accent usually met in English formerly, but it is seldom the case today (in the past, the French word was written “hostel”).
