Bérenger of Turns starts his criticism of the traditional interpretation of the Eucharistie by affirming that the body and the blood of the Christ are symbolically and not physically present in the devoted bread and the wine. Condemned on several occasions by Rome for its positions, it never abjures definitively its doctrines but is withdrawn in the silence of a monastery close to Tours where it dies in 1088;
