Year
Year or Annan (安南, Pinyin: ānnán), of Year (peace) and Nam or Nan (south) in traditional and modern Chinese, name of country, meaning “the pacified South literally”. This name was given by the Chinese dynasty of the Tang (618 - 907) to a country which it colonized and which became the current Vietnam. After independence (939), the Vietnamese emperors gave different names to their country, and the name Annam fell in disuse until the end the 19th century when the France replaced Chinese sovereignty thanks to the Traité of Tianjin according to the Second war of opium the ressuscita to indicate the central area of Vietnam. France after having conquered Vietnam during long and difficult countryside, divided its new colonial conquest into three parts for better reigning: the Tonkin in North, the Year in the Center, and the Cochinchine in the South.

With the kingdoms of the Kampuchea and Laos, the three areas Vietnameses, indivisible in the history and the culture, formed the French Indo-China. There was however a strange confusion: the French authorities called the whole territory of Vietnam by the same name: Year. Consequently, the name Annam designated at the same time Vietnam and her central part, and the name “Year” designated the inhabitant of Vietnam or the Year, and the adjective “year” indicated all that relates to Vietnam or only the Year. The kingdoms of Kampuchea and Laos were vassal in fact and right of the empire of Year on arrival of the French of the Second Empire of Napoleon III.
