Work of personal initiative framed

The Work of Personal Initiative Framed , or TIPE , is a test common to the majority of the entrance examinations at the scientific Universities. It is in a certain manner the big brother of TPE carried out with the college. With its creation in 1995 the TIPE was an option with the entrance Examinations at the scientific Universities (see Preparatory class at the universities). Since 1997, it became an obligatory test for the majority of the contests.

Principle and unfolding of the TIPE

The goal of the TIPE is to make discover with the students the scientific step necessary to any engineer and thus requires a real work. It however is regularly called into question, just like TPE.

The TIPE is generally centered on two topics which are often enough vast to cover with many subjects centered on physics, the Chimie, mathematics, and industrial sciences (according to the dies). Each year has its own topic: thus the topic of the year of sup (for the students not redoubling to them 2nd year) is used as general topic with the talk, that of the year of spé like topic of development (under-topic). The students who thus began their research on the topic of their year of sup must make evolve/move their talk to cover that with the 2nd year, to even change subject.

Unfolding

The first stage consists in defining a subject not too ambitious: it is for example to better avoid the quantum physics and the astronomical phenomena in physics, abstracted enough subjects and very descriptions, the goal not being to make an encyclopedic talk but to study a phenomenon which can appear sometimes very simple, but still enough vast to be able to direct it according to the topic of the 2nd year, and as far as possible, with horse towards two of the principal matters of the die (maths and physics in MP, physics and SO in PSI, physics and chemistry out of PC, physics and SO out of Pt), the jury, composed of two inspectors, being in general composed of a “specialist” in each matter. It is to better avoid completely excluding from exposed one of the inspectors. If it is not possible, it is necessary, as far as possible, that the talk is not completely inaccessible to somebody who is not specialist on the matter.

It is necessary then, with the length of the year, to carry out modelings, experiments, even of the Computer programs according to the die and the selected subject. The visit of a laboratory or the meeting with a researcher is often advised. The development of the TIPE is closed by the drafting of a synoptic card where one exposes his subject, the bonds with the topic of the year and his step.

Lastly, an oral test in front of a jury sanctions the TIPE. It lasts 20 minutes (10 of presentation + 10 of questions of the jury). It is necessary to expose to it the scientific step of the TIPE and its conclusions, but also the encountered difficulties and the limits of calculations or modelings carried out.

The ADS (Analysis of Scientific Documents)

A scientific file of a score of pages with diagrams and graphs is provided to the candidate, who has 2:15 to study it. At the end of this period, the candidate must make 20 minutes an oral presentation (10 of presentation and 10 of questions of the jury), which it will support with the transparencies carried out during the 2:15 of preparation and which will have obligatorily to include/understand the plan of the talk. This presentation must give an account of the scientific file given to the candidate, but does not have to be a simple summary. The candidate must make a personal capital contribution (diagram which it even created to him, precise details or analogies carried out thanks to his personal culture or with its courses during the year).

In the 2:15 official, 15 minutes are planned for the transit, if the room where the subjects are recovered is not the same one as that where one passes, which brings back the time of the test to 2:00.
