Windows XP Embedded

Windows XP Embedded is the version capable of being put on board on peripherals of XP. It is about a version divided into software components. The kit of development makes it possible to compose the image of wanted Windows XP, by including whole or part of the functionalities (support of materials, applications available, access to the network,…). It is then enough to transfer this image towards the peripheral targets to make use of it.

Information

The kit of development

The kit of provided development makes it possible to compose a spreadable image of Windows XP. This image occupies less place than Windows XP Pro, because comprises generally only the necessary one, without being encumbered pilots of non-existent material, or unutilised applications.

The paying version costs approximately 995$, that is to say 780€.

It is also available free in version of evaluation limited to 120 days (approximately 4 months): images Windows XP Embedded created (starting from the first Boot) and development tools.

The kit of development (Windows XP Embedded Studio) is composed of a whole of applications:

  • a basic manager of data to store the different components of Windows XP.
  • an editor of component allowing to add the pilots of a specific material, and to create dependences with other components (pilot,…).
  • Various utility applications such as TAP.EXE ( Honest Target Analyzer ) to list the peripherals material of the architecture on which this program is launched.
  • an editor of configuration allowing to create, modify a configuration, to check the dependences, and to create the image of Windows XP Embedded.

Tests on the same machine

It is possible to carry out the tests on the same machine where the kit is installed, if this machine is identical to the target machine of deployment.

In this case, it is possible to have to create a new partition NTFS on the hard drive (between 200Mo and 3Go according to the needs). For that, either the hard drive has the place necessary (space on the disc not allocated), or it is necessary to divide the existing partition into two. In this last case, no tool is provided with Windows XP to carry out this task, it will be necessary to use an external application (such QtParted under linux, interfacing ntfsresize).

Deployment

The image created must be transferred towards partition NTFS from the target machine. Among the manners of proceeding:
  • direct Copy of files, transfer between partitions if you deploy on the same machine,
  • Copie of the files on the target machine by using CD bootable,
  • Création of CD of installation.

Installation

Once the kit is downloaded, three named repertories Disk1 , Disk2 , Disk3 are created.
  1. To launch the program Disk1 \ setup.exe to install all the elements necessary. This stage will install XP Embedded SP1;
  2. To launch the program Disk3 \ setup.exe to install all the elements necessary. This last stage will install XP Embedded SP2.

First image

To constitute an image;
  1. In the menu File , to select Importation… , then the file devices.pmq , then, big step , to specify a file of log;
  2. Cliquer the button Import , and to await…
  3. When the importation is finished, the application must post that no error occurred. But however certain warnings are very important, in particular Warning: Device driver not found for… . In the last lines of log, to check well that the number of added peripherals is equal to the number of peripherals of the file devices.pmq .
  4. *Si a warning of this type is posted, to solve the problem, then to start again at stage 3;
  5. *Si no warning is posted, to record the file devices.sld or a more explicit name;
  6. To leave Component designer ,
  7. To import the component in the database while launching Component Database Manager , then by clicking the button Importation .

To solve Device driver not found

To note the name of the missing peripheral, and to create a component for this one then. For that, it is possible to seek components on www.xpefiles.com, or to create it starting from the pilots downloaded or copied since CD of installation:
  1. To extract the files from the pilot so necessary (files compressed or car-extractable), and to place these files in a repertory;
  2. To launch Component designer
