Wind islands

The Wind islands (Italian Eolie Insulates) or islands Lipari of the name of the principal island, are a volcanic Archipel in the north of the Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is an appreciated tourist destination which attracts more than 200.000 visitors each year. They are registered with the world heritage UNESCO

Geography

On the whole, this archipelago comprises 17 islands but only 7 are inhabited. Only 3 islands are accessible to the cars. All the islands have a volcanic origin but only Vulcano and Stromboli still has an active volcano.

The seven island S principal inhabited of the archipelago are:

  • Lipari (10 554 inhabitants), whose Ville of the same name (Lipari) is the Capitale: mines of stone-pounce
  • Stromboli (volcano) (420 inhabitants), with famous the Volcano in important activity, the only one of Europe with the Etna.
  • Vulcano whose volcano (391 meters of altitude) in sleep since 1890, emits fumerolles. At the edge of the Sea, Bain S of sulfurous Boue relieve various affections.
  • Alicudi is the most Western island of the archipelago and comprises only approximately 150 inhabitants.
  • Filicudi comprises 6 extinct volcanos and approximately 250 inhabitants.
  • Salina is the second larger island of archipelago (27 km ²). It draws its name from the salt exploitations which were there. It comprises 2300 inhabitants.
  • Panarea measures only 3.4 km ² and comprises 280 inhabitants.

History

A legend wants that Éole colonized the archipelago during the Trojan War, another that it is the fact of Italy NS Southerners. One knows sure source that Greek of Cnide unloaded in 580 av. J. - C., with Pentathlon at their head.

A battles took place between the fleets Carthaginian Roman and in -260. Rome lost the battle.

The inclusion of the Wind Islands to the World heritage of UNESCO is threatened by the project of building of step less than four new ports at the village of Lipari according to known as the Italian National Commission of UNESCO.
