The reverend William Lee or Lea (about 1550 - 1610) was an English, inventive ecclesiastic of the knitting loom the Bas.

William Lee lived with Calverton close to Nottingham. In 1589, it invented the machine with to knit bottoms and license with the Bonneterie to become the main activity of the the Midlands.

Knitting presented engineering problems which remained a long time unanswered. This Tissage with a wire seems to be appeared at the 15th century. With the invention of Lee, one quickly passed from manual knitting to a machine whose automatism was already advanced and who was to still make the admiration of Diderot in the middle of the 18th century.

William Lee saw himself driven back everywhere, and even threatened its invention so much the production upset and gave of fear to the working population. With the Strike S of printers of the middle of the 16th century, they were the first working demonstrations and destruction of machines
