Wikibooks

Wikibooks is a project of the foundation Wikimedia, launched the July 10th 2003 to create a whole of freely accessible teaching works via a Wiki. Formerly named Wikimedia Free Textbook Project , its official name is Wikibooks in English.

History

This project started in answer to a request of the wikipédien Karl Wick, which wished a separate space where it would be possible to write teaching books in a Community way, for in particular placing at the disposal human knowledge in a free and free way and thus fighting against the inequalities in front of education. Twenty days after its creation, the July 30th 2003, it counted already 123 modules created and 47 recorded users.

Some of the first works were completely original, while others started starting from works under license GNU Free Documentation License found on Internet. All the contents of the site are covered by this license. The contributions remain the property of their authors, while the Copyleft ensures that those will remain freely redistribuables.

The principal controversies related on the limits of the project (only of the teaching works or all kinds of books), like to the adopted licenses, and the name of the project.
