Whitley Stokes (born the February 28th 1830 and deceased the April 13rd 1909) is a Linguiste Britannique specialist in the Celtic Langues (a Celtisant) and particularly in the Moyen Irish and Vieil Irish.

Biography

Wire of William Stokes and grandson of Whitley Stokes (both professors of physics at the university of Dublin), Whithley follows its studies to the Irish university of Trinity College to Dublin and became lawyer in 1855.

In 1862, it leaves in India where it occupies several official stations. In 1877, it is named legal adviser of the council of the Vice-roi of the India for which it writes articles of the Civil code and criminal. It carries out then several other work d´intérêt general within the framework of the public office.

In 1879, it is named president of the Indian legislative Commission before returning in England in 1882. In 1887 it obtains several honorary degrees of many universities and is named member of the British Academy.

Whitley Stokes is perhaps most famous Celtisant of Great Britain. He worked on this subject in India and England. He studied and made research on texts in Langue Gaelic, Breton Langue and cornic Langue. A great number of its work were published in the Celtic Revue , founded and directed by Henri Gaidoz then by Henri d' Arbois of re-examined periodic allemandes, Austrian Jubainville and d´autres or British of Celtic philology.
