Noces of blood ( Bodas de Sangre ) is one of the central plays of the work of Federico Garcia Lorca. Drama taking as a starting point the traditional life of the Andalusian villages, this part recalls the tragic history of an impossible but irrepressible passion, in the closed company of a small village.
Characters
- veined the (the mother): mother of been engaged, this old woman lost her husband and her oldest son, killed by the hand of “Felix”. The marriage of his/her son junior means for it the most total loneliness, locked up between the four walls of its house, to stir up its hatred against the enemy family.
- El Novio (been engaged): Young person and well done, it has a social good condition and knew, through work and of eagerness, to join together good grounds, constituting a sufficient capital to make a success of a good marriage.
- Novia (been engaged): Young girl of good family, in ground possession vast, it lives with her father in a cave, habitat typical of the south-Spanish area, isolated enough from the remainder of the village.
- Léonardo : Only named character of the history, it is married and has a little boy with a woman who is not other than the cousin of Novia. He belongs to the family of Felix and was promised in marriage before to Novia, which he could not marry for lack of money.
Summary of the part
All seems to smile to the Fiancé young person, who, after having joined together good grounds, becomes engaged to beautiful and rich Novia: the marriage prepares according to the traditions and all appears to occur without clash in an attentive world to respect the traditions but in the intimacy, the things are not so obvious only with the first glance. The mother of fiancié, not very enthusiastic with the idea to only find itself in her house until her death, sees of an evil eye this union, lending the ear to least the commérages about promised. She accepts finally for the happiness of her son and in preparation for the grandsons and of the grand-daughters who will come to carry a possible help to her loneliness.However Novia, if it is firmly decided to marry its fiancié then to pass, as it must, the remainder of its days locked up in its house to look at to only, cannot choke its love for Leonardo him, although this one is from now on married.
The morning even of its weddings, it is Leonardo the first guest to arrive, whereas been engaged is not yet ready: with the wire of the conversation, one includes/understands the extent of their reciprocal passion, savagely repressed on the two sides, with violence but without success. When the remainder of the wedding arrives, in love ones separate, with the firm intention never to be re-examined but whereas the marriage has just been celebrated and that the festival beats full sound, the inevitable one arrives and Leonardo flees with Novia, thorough by a force more powerful than to want to them.
A long tracking in wood follows, guided hand of Master by hands more powerful than those of the men: been engaged the insult ends up meeting the runaways and, into the sinister night, the two young men, Leonardo and Novio, will fall one by the hand from the other, struck more still by their destiny.
