Wahrani

Wahrani has 2 explanations, it represents in 1st place a Habitant of the Wilaya of Wahran (Oran) and in certain very rare cases a style of music:

  • Wahrani wants to say Arab Oranais in , it represents a Habitant Sexe Masculin of the Wilaya of Oran (Arab Wahran in ), the inhabitants in entirety are called Wharnas.

  • the wahrani is a musical style which has its origin in the suburbs of Oran of the Années 1930. It combines the Melhoun with elements Berbère S, Bedouin S and Spanish and there are political points.

The traditional instruments of the melhoun are replaced by modern instruments like the Oud, the Accordéon, the Banjo or the Piano. By a change of the melodies and rates/rhythms, the wahrani acquired a stamp more universal than the melhoun, thus resembling the music of the Arab countries and the Spanish, French and Latin-American songs which are produced in mass.

The wahrani differs from the melhoun by its musical smoothness. Moreover, the poetic ideas of the wahrani are more elaborate than those of the Raï.
