Wadowice

Description

Wadowice is a city of the south of the Poland, located at 50 km of Cracow. Between 1975 and 1998, the city belonged to the Voïvodie of Bielsko-Biała, since 1999 it belongs to the Voïvodie of Small-Poland. The city is located on the river banks Skawa. The number of inhabitants amounts to 19.248 (in 2004). It is the capital of Powiat de Wadowice, located along the international road which connects Cracow to Cieszyn. The city develops dynamically

History

  • In 1327 first written evocation of Wadowice - in a homage to the Czech king Jan Luksembourg by the prince of Oswiecim Jean the 1st scholastic.
  • In 1430 Wadowice receives the statute of city by Prince d' Oswiecim, Casimir 1st (Kazimierz I).
  • In the years 1482 - 1493 the city is controlled by Władysław Zatorski of the dynsatie of the Piast
  • At the 16th century, town of craft industry and trade.
  • In 1819 Wadowice becomes vast Canton of Wadowice, extending on 3380 km ², 10 cities, 2 poles commercial and 340 villages, with a population cash 350.000 hab. the first governor of Wadowice was Louis de Sertes, and the city counted 2500 inhabitants then.
  • In the years 1867 - 1975 the city becomes the capital of Powiat
  • May 18th 1920 birth of Karol Wojtyła - which will become later the Pope Jean-Paul II
  • In the years the 1975-1998 city is administratively attached to Voïvodie de Bielsko
  • May 27th 2006 visit of the Pope Benoît XVI
