Vouvray (Indre-et-Loire)

Geography

Vouvray is located at 10 kilometers in the east of Tours, in the valley of the the Loire, in edge of the Loire and the Cisse, whose confluence with the river is located in the commune. Vouvray is built partly with hillside in which nest of many houses troglodytes and cellars of wine producers. On the slope, the common one counts some important hamlets and of very many vines.

History

Gastronomy

the wine is king in Vouvray, so much so that the commune has even the name of Vouvray-the-wines .
the barnacle, grape juice at the beginning of its fermentation (new wine). It is tasted at the end of October at mid-November approximately.

Places and monuments

Castle of Moncontour: wished a long time, in vain, by Balzac (" Moncontour has my prédilection" , letter with Mrs Hanska of June 10th, 1846). One can visit there the Museum of the wine, écomusée very complete (more than 2000 traditional tools).
Church of Vouvray: on the wall of the church one will see an interesting monument with Charles Bordes, creator of the Schola Cantorum. In front of the church, where at one time a " was; elm of Sully" , one can see a stone of waiting of deaths.
Place Charles Vavasseur, in addition to the bust (work of Aime Octobre) of this former mayor of Vouvray, the visitor will contemplate a rare monument, dedicated to a character of fiction: illustrates it Gaudissart , hero of the novel éponyme of Honore de Balzac.
