Volvo 480

The Volvo 480 is a model of the Car manufacturer of Swedish origin Volvo which was for the first time presented to the public at the time of the Living room of Geneva of March 1986.

General information

Description

It is a car Bicorps with three doors: two side doors and a generous Forage ladder. Its body before rather aggressive approaches a Coupé, but its back takes the form of a station-wagon; this so characteristic type is called a Break of hunting. Its silhouette is clearly a reference to the other Break of hunting of the mark, which knew its hours of glory with the beginning of the year 1970: famous the Volvo 1800 ES.

It should be noted that the Volvo 480 is the first traction Swedish mark. The platform of the 480 was re-used for the whole of the series of the 400: the Volvo 440 and the Volvo 460.

Development

Its development started under the aegis of daN Warbin, starting from 1979 within Volvo Holland, for a production in the factory of Born to the Netherlands in the province of the Limbourg close to Maastricht (ex factory of DAF that Volvo Because Corporation bought in 1973). The design was entrusted to the department style of Volvo Holland directed by Robert Koch. But in the beginning this one was in competition with the department design of Volvo Sweden directed by Jan Wilsgaard, like two famous Italian agencies: Bertone and Coggiola.

Marketing

Its marketing in Europe began in June 1986. Although it was developed at the origin for the US market (from where the presence of Headlights dipped/retractable Main-beam headlamps so that they are with the lawful height in North America), it will never be marketed on this continent. The last models were marketed in 1996, but are actually models 1995.

  • the Convertible: a prototype of Cabriolet was studied within Volvo but led forever to its marketing. Independent carriage-builders also studied a Cabriolet which on the other hand had to be marketed, but with very few specimens.
  • phase II: it is the study of the evolution of the 480 which is characterized by the disappearance of retractable fires. This study succeeded whereas the decision to stop the marketing of the 480 had been made.
