Volkhov ( Russian Волхов in ), in the past Volkhovstroï ( Волховстрой in Russian), is a Russian city of the Oblast of Leningrad located at 122 km in the east of Saint-Pétersbourg on the river Volkhov. Its population was estimated in 2002 at: 46 596 inhabitants. Its geographical coordinates are: .
The city developed during the period of industrialization of the moitiée first of the 20th century. The Gare of Volkhov was built in 1904 in the village Zvanka, it was served by the Saint-Pétersbourg-Vologda line. In 1918 began construction from the hydroelectric Barrage of Volkhov (the first of the USSR) ; the powerplant was operational in 1926. An aluminum factory was established near the stopping in 1932. The December 27th 1933, the railway station, the stopping and the power stations were joined together, with several adjacent villages, within the town of Volkhovstroï , lately created. The city was re-elected in Volkhov in 1940.
