Vladimir Volkoff

Vladimir Volkoff , born the November 7th 1932 with Paris, dead the September 14th 2005 with Bourdeilles (the Dordogne), is a writer French of Russian origin. He is the prolix author of historical novels, having for major topics the Russia and the Guerre of Algeria, and novels of Espionnage.

Sometimes regarded as “the French writer of the Cold war” par excellence, it also revealed the secrecies of the Désinformation. For youth, it wrote spy novels, under the Pseudonyme of Lieutenant X .

Biography

Of Russian origin, Volkoff was not the son of a “refuznik” but that of an emigrant who in France earned his living like washer of cars. It was born on the French soil, is high in the memory of the lost motherland, but in honesty with respect to France, the land of welcome of its family.

Graduate in traditional letters, doctor of philosophy, novelist, essay writer, Vladimir Volkoff was the author of many works, marked by the topics of the cold war, the information, of handling, but also of metaphysics and spirituality.

The orthodoxe faith was “cardinal” for this writer born with Paris the November 7th, 1932 emigrated Russian parents. He is a great-grand-nephew of the Russian type-setter Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski.

After studies at the university of the Sorbonne to Paris and that of Liege, he was English professor with Amiens (1955-57). Engaged in the French Army (1957-1962) during the War of Algeria, he was officer of the information, experiment which marks it and inspires its work. It is over there that it understood that a war is not played only with weapons in full sun, but in the shade and the night, and in the embassies.

; Its American stay After its demobilization, it left to the the United States to teach the French and Russian literature. He was translator (1963-65), Russian and French professor (1966-77). Fascinated by this large and powerful country, bubbling and contradictory, it remained there more than ten years. Among its “American” works appear the Agent triples (1962), Métro for the hell (1963), the Musketeers of the Republic (1964) and Towards a metric Frenchwoman (1977).

At the end of the Years 1970, the East-West confrontation is always of topicality, but the greatest danger was less the military danger than the intellectual paralysis vis-a-vis the system and with communist rhetoric. The ideological fight opposes two designs of the world and freedom. Volkoff becomes the analyst of this combat with as arms its feather and a very solid culture Géopolitique.

Always in the Years 1970, under the pseudonym of Lieutenant X, it publishes accounts for teenagers with the green Bibliothèque, the series of the Langelot , adventures of a young secret agent. In this series it showed its taste for the romantic intrigues, the bounces and its deep knowledge of the power struggles which prevailed in the world.

; Its return in Europe In 1979, its entitled book the reversal (1979), is worth an international repute to him. Dedicated to Graham Greene, one of its Masters, this novel translated into twelve languages draws its title from the operation consisting in making work with its profit an unfavourable agent flushed out. the Retournement tells a history of espionage where clash American intelligence services, French and Soviet, but on this history itself with unexpected reversals superimposes an ignored “mystical upheaval” of these same secret services and which will do of its main character one almost Martyr.

In 1980, appear Moods of the Sea , vast contemporary fresco in four volumes: Olduvaï , the lesson of anatomy , Intersection , Masters of Time . With the Assembly , Grand Prix of the novel of the French Academy in 1982, Vladimir Volkoff puts in scene the methods and the networks within the competences and the traps of the “Soviet Désinformation” in Europe; the writing of this novel would have been suggested to him by Alexandre de Marenches, director of the SDECE, which would have provided him actual facts on which the screen of the account is built.

In 1985, inspired by its American experiment, it publishes the Professor of history , in which it describes confrontation cocasse between a man of letters, Petri of tradition and a young heiress surfant on the vagueness of the modernism.

Capacities, handling, fights of influence, misinformation are in the center of several of its books, like the Interrogation (1988), the Men of the Tsar (1989), a historical novel on Russia of died of Ivan the Terrible to the advent of Romanov.

In the Years 1990, it publishes Looping (1990), a novel on the insecurity of the large metropolises, the Trinity of the Evil or indictment to be used with the posthumous lawsuit as Lénine, Trotski and Stalin (1991). The fall of the Berlin Wall, will enable him to open on all the types of Désinformation S and handling, and not only those of the Communist regimes. It inserted the term of misinformation in the French vocabulary, with the Misinformation Weapon of war (republication 2004 by the editions the Old one of Man), the Crack (1996), Little story of the misinformation (1999), Désinformation red-handed (1999), Removal (2000), Manuel of politically correct the (2001).

In the Years 2000, it had joined again with its Slavic roots, by publishing many texts on the Histoire of Russia, on the Orthodoxie and supported publicly the policy of Vladimir Poutine.

Vladimir Volkoff was also the author of historical biographies ( Vladimir , Red Sun , Tchaïkovski ) and wrote for the theater. The Grand Prix Jean Giono for the whole of its work was decreed to him in 1995.

It would have wished that the whole of its work be recognized while being elected with the French Academy.

Analyzes of its work

In many its works, he made an effort, by mixing information with romantic, to reveal with the French-speaking public, the part of the big game which was played between the governments of Paris, Berlin, London and Moscow. Its editor and friendly Bernard de Fallois wrote about " Reversal " : “ It is with the spy novel what " Crime and châtiment" is with the detective novel ”.

The novelist

Admiror of the novelist and secret agent Graham Greene, to which it dedicates its first novel to success, the reversal , Vladimir Volkoff shares with this author two recurrent themes: Christianity on the one hand, operations of the secret services which it also seems to know to him very well of the other. It adds to it a visible love of the Russia which yields it of nothing to that Greene for the England and a dislike which it does not seek to hide of the processes used historically by Communism like by the special services of all the countries; and thus very logically, with a greater force still if it is possible, towards the processes used by the communist special services. That does not prevent it therefore to admire technical quality and to present it of it as a clock and watch maker would show a beautiful mechanism ( the assembly ), even if the hour indicated is not according to him the good one.

It does not throw therefore the anathema on the men taken in this system, and who are always likely of redemption (another expensive topic with Graham Greene): Popov, in the reversal , will be touched by conversion and will die, following a hitch in its execution by a killer, in a state of grace. The communist senior official who arranges diabolic the Montage will praise at the time of his anguish to have given to the occasion “some skilleds of foot to the devil” without the single witness of this one (which prefers not to include/understand) nor the reader not being able to know if this man played a double game all his life, or were too much taken in his life by his function to think of the import of his acts, or is delirious simply with the approach of death.

This dead is also a topic very present at Volkoff. Its first novel, Subway for the hell , whose hero preferred for share of heritage a funeral parlor to a casino (because only some play, but everyone bursts ) speaks with last about his death - “ I died only a few moments later, under the effect of what I will dare to call a intravénéneuse puncture” -, because it “was recruited” in a totalitarian underground empire which uses as labor force of the technically improved zombies.

Besides the inhabitants of this empire ask only for one thing, which is to die for good, but their conditioning prevents some. Mauvisage will use this possibility to conquer the capacity while returning to the absolute zero of existence its opponents who leave their sad life with a great satisfaction, but will realize that it is not more advanced. This pessimistic vision is also characteristic of Volkoff.

The character of the Professor of history is more attaching. Royalist, like the author, it annually assures of his fidelity the man whom it regards as the true heir to the throne of France. When he learns by the son from this one that it was about an impostor… he takes his feather to present to the true heir his excuses for this disastrous error and to take again his tireless veneration which simply changed object. But is this the good this time?

The essay writer

Its test on Lawrence Durrell, Lawrence the splendid one: test on Lawrence Durell and the relativistic novel , watch the influence of this writer on Volkoff with his impossible search of the truth. It wrote a foreword for besides the quartet of Alexandria in the collection " Traditional modernes" book of Pocket.

Several works of Volkoff, and in particular its Little story of the misinformation and its Manual of politically correct the , examine in a squeaking way conditionings to which we were subjected and who created in us, through repetition, like the one second nature. It sticks to dismount them one by one, not without a squeaking humor, and as a man who knows so well his subject which one has almost the impression to be in the presence of professional deformation . It however shows us little by little that, at least on certain points, it is us who were deformed little by little to be made anomic and thus more vulnerable. But with which?

Extract: problem is well that of Europe and of “its two lungs”, to quote Jean-Paul II, more especially as, if functional Europe is never done, there are strong chances so that it is not of the Atlantic in the Ural, which is absurd, but of the Atlantic in the Pacific, which is registered in the geographical data and would dissatisfy surely the Uncle Sam. There is thus nothing astonishing that the Uncle Sam puts as of now all the possible sticks in the wheels of this oecumenical-there Europe.

Convictions monarchists, it published several “committed” tests: “ Why I am fairly democratic ” and “ Why I would be rather aristocrat ” and especially " Roi".

Criticisms and polemics

Anecdote

Vladimir Volkoff found himself on the same plate of Apostrophes as François Cavanna during an emission devoted to the Russians. The two men, that all seemed to separate on the plan from the ideas, at least recognized a common love of the Russian language and not the least large of the French language.
