Virgil Thomson (born the November 25th 1896 with Kansas City (Missouri) - died the September 30th 1989 with New York) is an American type-setter.
Biography
Thompson is very often associated with
Aaron Copland. In the Thirties it composes for the theater and the cinema in close cooperation, for the booklets, with
Gertrude Stein. In 1949, he is prize winner of the Prix Pulitzer of music thanks to his composition for the film
Louisiana Story . At the end of its life, Thompson becomes a kind of mentor and paternal figure for the new generation of tonal type-setters among whom
Ned Rorem,
Paul Bowles and
Leonard Bernstein, which forms a circle sharing the same musical and sexual inclinations.
