Vingolf

Vingolf or Vingólf in Vieux norrois is a building located at Ásgard.

Paradise, sanctuary of the goddesses or residence of Einherjar?

Vingolf is mentioned only in the Edda of Snorri Sturluson, which probably invented the term. Its function is dubious.

Vingolf is initially presented like synonym of Gimlé, where will live the right men after their death, at the sides of Alföd (Odin) ( Gylfaginning , 3).

It is then described like a very beautiful sanctuary pertaining to the goddesses ( Gylfaginning , 14).

Vingolf is finally, like the Valhalle, residences of the Einherjar ( Gylfaginning , 20).

Room of the friends or room of the wine ?

Insofar as the orthography of the name is not established in an unquestionable way, two significances are possible: room of the friends (of vinr , friend) or, if the I is long ( Víngólf ), room of the wine (of vín , wine). Víngolf could then be synonymous with Valhalle.
