Denomination
The official designation, such as reserve by the geographical official Code of INSEE, is Villeneuve-the-Avignon . However, alternative name Villeneuve lez Avignon east prevails in the area, for example in all the official documents of the City like on its Web site.A little explanations concerning these two orthographies: One writes
1 - That is to say Villeneuve-the-Avignon, with indents and grave accent, " lès" , meaning " near de" , " other côté" (of the Rhone)!
2 - That is to say Villeneuve lez Avignon, with " z" without accent nor indents: it is this orthography which was retained officially by the commune for several reasons:
- The first because it acts of another orthography coming from old French
- The second because by writing " lez" , " is removed; les" who induces a word in the plural, one thus avoids temptation to see " Avignon" affublé of the " s" at the end, which sied not with a proper name.
- The third, is related on data processing and the foreign languages: the keyboards qwerty do not have a " e" accentuated, of many languages do not use the accents, and the capital letters are written commonly without accent. To choose the denomination determined by the city thus avoids, de facto, the appearance of new orthographies!
History

In 1292, a treaty of Paréage between the king of France Philippe Beautiful the and the abbot of Saint-Andrew envisages the construction of a Castle-extremely, the Fort Saint-Andrew, and of a tower located vis-a-vis Avignon, the Tour Philippe Beautiful the, to protect the abbey and the border from the kingdom of France. A royal country house is then created on banks of the the Rhone bearing the name of Villeneuve Saint-Andrew.
