Vielsalm
Vielsalm (in Walloon Li Viye Såm ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Luxembourg.
It is in the district of Bastogne, 6992 inhabitants.
The village, as that of Salmchâteau owes its name with a small river, the Salm (the area names besides the Valley of Salm, or Country of Salm).
Vielsalm ( Viye Såm as a Walloon) means Vieille Salm literally, because indeed, at a time given the lord his castle moved, and this became the new center of population; but the wheel still turned, and the center became again the " vieille" Salm, which was consequently called thus, and which eclipsed the " nouvelle" Salm (today Salm-Castle ).
The small river which passes by Vielsalm names also the Salm .
The word " Salm" would come from Celtic “the salwa” (black, scrambled), and name of the river that of the village. Homophony with the German word " Salm" (salmon) also carried to allot this etymology (on the armorial bearings of the lord of Salm like those of the current commune, one finds two salmons red on white zone)
The city knew an important exploitation of the Ardoise, and a stone to be sharpened local, the Coticule.
