Viareggio price

The price Viareggio is a literary prize Italy N founded in 1929 in the homonymous city by Leonida Rèpaci, Alberto Colantuoni and Carlo Salsa.

History

The motivation of the creation of the new price was written by Rèpaci, author of Storia dei fratelli Rupe ; he wrote:

We, those which found it, want to create a price which would be of greater scale than the Prix Bagutta, born a few months ago in the Pepori restaurant with Milan and predestined with a life of prestigious circle. We want (...) to make known it in the Italian literary company much more than Bagutta, and to build around him, with prudence, a possibility of meeting and recognition of all these forces, all testimonys which underwent the ideological pressure of the Dictature (...). It was enough that among the founders the undersigned was (the memory of the Prison of Palmi was still very sharp for me, like those of my journalistic activity on the press anti fascistic until the end of August 1925), so that the price is perceived as a nonconformist and so that it gathers the sympathy of those which the dictatorship was insulating and to paralyze for then the asservir.

Luigi Pirandello and Massimo Bontempelli attended the first handing-over of the price. The first year was gained by Lorenzo Viani ( Ritorno went patria , published at the publisher of Mussolini, the Alps), ex-aequo with Anselmo Bucci ( It pittore flying , ED. Ceschina).

In 1931, Lando Ferretti replaced Rèpaci, and as from 1934 it is Galeazzo Ciano which supervises the price.

The attribution of the Viareggio price was suspended during the war and was immediately taken again after, according to the will of Rèpaci. This one will deal with the price until its death in 1985.

The choice of the prize winner of almost all the prices, since first, was very polemical, because of the interventions of Rèpaci in the decisions of the jury, although it was itself which selected the members of them.

Thus for example, in 1946 jury had chosen to give price to Umberto Sheba, but when Rèpaci knew that Giacomo Debenedetti had already announced it to the poet, it convoked again the jury and did not let them leave that until they awarded the prize to Sheba for It canzoniere ex-aequo with the Pane duro of Silvio Micheli, both published at Einaudi.

In 1947 another polemic emerges. Everyone was convinced that the winner would be Alberto Moravia, but it was Antonio Gramsci which gained for its Quaderni dal carcere , whereas the rules of the Viareggio price stipulated that it could be given only the alive authors (Gramsci died in 1937).

Several prizes winner sent to the jury answers become famous. Thus, of Italo Calvino sent this Télégramme:

Finding the time of the literary prizes definitively finished, I give up the price because I do not feel in the state to continue to endorse empty institutions from now on of sens.

Meanwhile, there were many criticisms at the time of the addition at the price, the object itself, of figures and text, considered to be superfluous.

After the death of Rèpaci the organizers of the price were Natalino Sapegno and Cesare Garboli (this last until its in April 2004 death).

The price is divided today into four sections: Opera preceded (the first work), Narrativa , Poesia and Saggistica (test). For each one are designated a variable number finalists, among whom five works (the famous cinquine ) are selected. Lastly, one chooses the winner among these five books.

The jury decrees also the international prize Viareggio-Versilia , given each year to a known personality which is devoted to the communication between the people, the social progress and the Paix.
