Via Tolosane

The via Tolosane (or Toulouse way ) is the Latin name of one of the four ways of France of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle, more in the south. It passes by Toulouse, from where its name but its point gathering and starting is with Arles. It crosses the country of stage in stage and crosses the Pyrenees by the Col of Somport. Spanish side, the way continues under the name of Camino aragonés until the stage of Puente Reina. The junction is done then with the Camino navarro, which is not other than the continuity of the three other ways left France. From there, the way towards the city compostellane continues under the name of Camino francés.

History

At the beginning of Arles, it via Tolosane or Arletanensis, that Aimery Picaud in the Guide of the Pilgrim names via Aegidia road of Saint-Gilles (of the Gard) accommodated the jacquets come from Italy, of the Alpilles and of Provence, but, in opposite direction, with romieux come from Spain or France which went to Rome while borrowing, on the Italian side, it via Francigena was also used.

Its name is related to that of the capital of the dynasty comtale of the Saint-Gilles, who played, at the 12th century, an important role on the grounds of language of oc.

Rich person of history and linked by the same language, that of the Troubadour S, these grounds transfer to open out one of most brilliant civilizations of the Moyen-âge, as testify some, beside the vestiges of Roman antiquity, cities, monasteries and Romance churches which mark out the layout of this way of the south, and dominating them, the castles and the pilot strongholds of the tragedy cathare.

It was preceded by the Via Domitia - Way by Compostelle, which goes from the Col of Montgenèvre to Arles, while passing by Sisteron, Apt, was also called the Via Francigena thus named by the Italians since it passes to France.

There was also a parallel way, the Chemin of Piedmont or “el cami deu EP of the coste” and which passes by Saint-Bertrand-with-Comminges, to join the Col of Somport.

All these ways borrowed el “Camino aragones” to join el “Camino frances” with “Puente Reina”.

Guide of the Pilgrim

To the 12th century, in its Guide of the Pilgrim , Aimery Picaud brings following information:

Chapter first

Ways of Saint-Jacob

“There are four roads which, driving in Saint-Jacob, meet into only one in Puente Reina, one passes by Saint-Gilles (of Gard), Montpellier, Toulouse, and Somport, (...)”

Chapter IV

holy Corps which rests on the road of Saint-Jacob and which the Pilgrims must visit.

Conclusion

There strictly speaking does not exist “historical way”. Nothing attests in certain cases the passage of the pilgrims. If it is only the presence of a holy body, often related to a local pilgrimage, like that of Lizier saint or Saint-Bertrand-of-Comminges. Both on “el cami deu EP of the coste”,

Little Holy Hospital Jacques, contrary to Via Podiensis, even less Brotherhood dating from the great period of the Pilgrimage, XIe - XIIIe century. On the other hand some rare testimonys dating from XVIe - XVIIe centuries, but with horse.
