Vervins

Vervins is a common French, located in the department of the Aisne and the area Picardy. Its inhabitants is called Vervinois.

Geography

Vervins, main city of the Thiérache, is a small town located on one of the arms of Vilpion, small tributary of the Serre, to 38 km in the North-East of Laon.

Vervins is mentioned for the first time by Ptolémée under the name of Verbinum . This city is located on an old way Roman and mentioned in the route of Antonin. Vestiges of Roman foundations there were found (theater, mercury statuette…).

It was the seat, with the Moyen-âge, of one évêché.

Thomas de Marle († 1130), father of Enguerrand II († 1147/1149), lord of Coucy, granted in 1123 a charter written in language romane  ; this communal charter took the name of " law of Vervins" when it was renewed, in 1163, by Raoul Ier de Coucy (v. 1135 - † 1191, before its departure for the Third crusade. Vervins was several times taken and recovery by the English and the French, during the war One hundred year old   ; Louis XI and Charles Bold the concluded in 1475 there the treaty which one called the commercial truces , first outline of the international commercial treaties. Several times taken or devastated by the Spanish during the wars of the 16th century with the house of Austria, it is famous for the treaty signed in 1598 between Henri IV and Philippe II, treated which ensured Picardy France and put an end to the war which for more than forty years had existed between France and the empire. ” (source: Victor Malta-Brown Adolphe, illustrated France , 1882)

Marc Lescarbot, lawyer, poet, writer, author of the first History of the News-France, was born in Vervins towards 1570.

Economic history

Malta-brown reported, in 1882, that industry and the trade “made all the richness of Vervins” and quoted the manufacture of fabrics of wire and cotton, of knittings of wool and wicker baskets.

Religious heritage

  • Parish church Notre-Dame, built with the hinge of the XII {{E}} and 13th centuries, on the site of a preceding church mentioned in 1135. Property of the commune. Altered or restored in 1553,1555,1700,1701,1723,1870,1876 and 1879. Classified under the historic buildings by decree of October 7th, 1975.

Civil inheritance

The topographic inventory of the ministry for the culture contains at least 90 notes, often very detailed, devoted to buildings of Vervins, although the protected elements are rare. There are moreover 307 notes under the movable objects, as well religious as civil.
