Countess Valentine de Riquet de Caraman (princess Paul de Bauffremont, then princess Georges Bibesco) (February 15th 1839 - August 25th 1914)

Girl of Joseph de Riquet de Caraman (1808-1886), prince de Chimay and of the princess, born Emilie Pellapra, countess of Brigode (1806-1871). She marries (April 18th 1861) Paul, prince de Bauffremont. The couple will have two girls: Catherine (N. in 1862), Jeanne (N. in 1864). Divorced in 1875, it remarie the same year with prince Georges Bibesco. From this union will be born three children: Georges, Nadege (Stirbey princess), Georges-Valentine (1880 - 1941).

Biography

Married to twenty-two years with the prince Paul de Bauffremont, whereas it was éprise of Antoine de Noailles, duke of Mouchy, and liked the fashionable life, it is found in a garrison town, under the cut of a brutal, miserly husband and runner. It obtains in 1874 the judicial separation and the guard of her two daughters.

To marry its knight being useful, the prince Georges Bibesco, met towards 1860, it is made naturalize in 1875 in the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg, in which the local law authorized the divorce, still prohibited in France, and remarie it (October 24th 1875) with Berlin.

Prince de Bauffremont obtained civil court of the Seine a judgment (March 10th 1876) pronouncing the cancellation of this marriage and withdrawing with the princess the guard of his children, judgment confirmed by the Court of Appeal of Paris (July 27th, 1876), then by the Court of appeal. A stop of the Court of Appeal of Paris enjoignit to the princess to return the children under Obligation of 1.000 francs per day. At the end of one year of resistance, the amount of the obligation reached 300.000 francs: Bauffremont made liquidate the obligation and seize the Château of Menars (Loir-et-Cher), that the princess had inherited her mother in 1871. The castle was sold with the biddings on July 16th 1876.

This resounding scandal exposed the Bibesco household to the ostracism of the society peoples: they ceased being received at the court of Berlin, were erased Almanac of Gotha, and had to be established in Romania, country of origin of Bibesco, that the princess hated deeply. She refused however that her husband stands as a candidate to the throne of Bulgaria, like pushed there Leon Gambetta and Juliette Adam.
