Valère Maxime

Valère Maxime or Valerius Maximus is a Historien and Roman Moraliste of the Ier century a. J. - C.. Undoubtedly born at the end from Ier front S. JC, he was consul of 14; contemporary of Tibère, it was well seen at his court.

Biography

Valère Maxime was useful in Asia under the consul Sextus Pompeius, then became consul of 14 after J. - C. Admitted at the court of the emperor Tibère, he wrote in Latin, under the dictorumque title Factorum memorabilium libri IX ( Of the facts and the memorable words ), a collection of anecdotes in nine pounds undoubtedly extracted the Greek and Roman historians. It is not an original work there, and the author does not seem to have shown a quite judicious criticism. However its book is useful for us, because it contains a rather great number of episodes which we do not know in addition; it is a repertory of facts being referred to the religion, the civil life and the social life, and of historical anecdotes.
