Vaitahu (Eiao)

Vaituha is a small valley located at the North-West of the island of Eiao (archipelago of the Marquises).

It contains the only river of the island, which emerges in bay of the same name. This bay is one of the two only points of Mouillage of Eiao, with the mouth of the river, by 27 meters basic. A water fall, in the low part of the valley, can appear spectacular after strong rains. The valley of Vaituha concentrates the major part of the fauna and the flora of Eiao, with many wild pigs.

The valley is one of the points of passage for the plate which forms most of the center of the island, towards which it goes up fast inclined.

From 1962 to 1963, the man of media Georges de Caunes lived there as a recluse. The bay of Vaituha was then known during several years under the name of “Bay of Caunes”.
