Vacquières
Vacquières is a common French, located in the department of the Herault and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. The saving in this village is primarily dedicated to the vine growing. Its inhabitants are Vacquiérois.
Geography
The commune of Vacquières is located at the east of the department of Herault, in edge of the department of the Gard. The communal territory includes/understands a zone of Garrigue S. the village however is determined of Vignoble S. the variation of Babara and the Camping on the other hand is located in full scrubland.The commune is crossed by the Brestalou, affluent of the Vidourle.
History
Many a sylex cut found on the territory of the commune shows a human presence at least since the Stone Age. The Gallo-Roman period sees the introduction of the culture of the vine and leaves archaeological traces: potteries and Gallo-Roman villa in particular.The first written mention of Vacquières goes up with 1151. It is about an act of the Viscount of Nimes mentioning the castrum of Vacheriis and indicating that the lord of this territory was Raymond de Vacheriis. In 1168, Jean de Montlaur creates the hospital of Sylve Gautier located close to the four ways of Patus. It was composed of a church, a hospital and a cemetery. Transformed then into sheep-fold, there remain only some sections of wall about it today.
Always at the 12th century, a small church is set up on the site of the current communal church. Called the “Roman bridge a long time”, the Camaous bridge on Brestalou is also built in XIIe century.
Vacquières has at least two glassmakings in 1572: in Fenouillet and the other in Patus. They function until the middle of the 17th century.
A second bridge on Brestalou is built in 1766, on the road of Sommières while the church is increased in 1856. It preserves only some elements of the church of origin which had known many installations between XIIe and the XIXe century. The law of separation of the church and the State of 1905 causes movements with Vacquières. The priest barricades himself in the church with his flocks singing of the canticles in order to avoid the inventory of the goods of church. One calls upon the armed force then: the door of the church is destroyed with the axe the March 7th 1906 to dislodge the priest.
The commune undertakes to lead water to the village in 1897. A municipal well supplied with a wind mill is dug in 1899. This wind mill, always upright today, is one of the symbols of the commune. The construction of a municipal tank is voted in 1904, but this project is delayed because of the opposition of the priest who did not admit the amputation of his garden, place chosen by the municipal council to build this tank. Work begins finally after the incident of March 7th, 1906 and construction is completed in 1907. A fountain on the place is also set up.

The mayor André Panchau is deceased the August 4th 2006. Denise Gomez is elected mayor the October 13rd 2006.

Economy
The Viticulture holds an essential place in the landscape and the economy of the commune. Let us quote Castles-Lascaux here and the Field of the Abbaye of Fenouillet, but specify that many vine growers vacquiérois are members of the co-operative located at Corconne, commune bordering located in the department on Gard. This co-operative was created in 1939.The vine is destroyed at the beginning of the 18th century by freezing causing an serious attack of subsistence in the commune whose population then reaches only 80 inhabitants. In 1907, will phyloxera it again destroyed the vines causing of many departures of wine growers and farm laborers towards the city. New destruction of the vines in 1956 by freezing. Two glassmakers perpetuate today the tradition of the work of glass with Vacquières.
Tourism
Stage city of the “Way of the glassmakers”, the commune includes/understands on its territory a campsite, “Park the Duke”. This ground primarily attended by Netherlanders, counts 272 bungalows.In addition to the communal church, it is advisable to announce here the “Roman Pont”, with the variation of the village, dating in fact from the 12th century.
Education
Since at least 1690, the village is equipped with a school. Failing this, between 1793 and 1842, it is the presbytery of the church which acts as school. Concerning the school of the girls, one knows that it was ensured between 1841 and 1849 by one living of the commune which receives the official agreement of the vice-chancellor of the academy to hold his courses. The girls are equipped with a new school bright burning coal in 1874 while the boys lay out of their since March 1849. The school of the girls becomes mixed in 1924, then firm its doors in 1926. Boys and girls will also find themselves at the old school of boys, mixed it since 1924. The courses exempted in these schools are of an elementary level.A new school is inaugurated the September 26th 1992. This school accommodates the children of Vacquières and the common neighbor of Sauteyrargues.
