History

At the Uppsala origin was located at a few kilometers in the north of the current city, with Gamla Uppsala ( france Vieil Upsal ). The place where the town of today was then called Östra Aros . According to Adam of Bremen the Upsal old man was the center of the paganism of the Swedes and at this place would have been a temple pagan where the kings sacrificed to the divinities of the old religion of Asar.

In 1164, approximately 100 years after the christianization of Sweden, Uppsala became the diocésaine city of the catholic archbishop's palace of Sweden, and in 1274 the city was rebuilt at its current place.

After the Réforme Uppsala remained the center of the Église of Sweden   ; the archbishop of the church Swedish Lutheran always resides in the city.

Domkyrkan , the cathedral, is with that of Trondheim the largest church of the Scandinavian countries . Its red brick turns reach 119 meters. Here rest Gustave 1st Vasa and Carl von Linné. By far, the silhouette of Uppsala is dominated by the high arrows of its cathedral, like by its castle, located over a hill.

Founded in 1477, the Université of Uppsala is oldest of Scandinavia still in existence (the general studium with Lund was active of 1425 until 1536 and the Danish reformation). There also exists in Uppsala another university, specialized in the natural science (SLU, Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet). The population currently (2005) consists of 40  % of students, come from all the country and the whole world.
