University of Toulouse
The Université of Toulouse is an old woman Université located in the town of Toulouse in France. It is the second university of province with: 97000 students after the University of Lyon, which took as pseudonym in their controversies the name of former Greek and Latin authors to form at the beginning of the VIIe century an academic center called l'" School of Toulouse" , famous for its work of déconstruction of grammar until making the language completely inintelligible to the laymen, and whose existence in Toulouse is still attested by Abbon de Fleury. One finds a multitude of work the Pseudoone, the Pseudoone, the Pseudoone or of Pdeudo-Énée, this last reporting the head office and the plundering of Toulouse into 584 by Gondowald, but under the mask of that of Rome by Phrygian Bastus. This school of esotericism and jargon will have an influence until in the monasteries of Ireland and of England where Énéide de Virgile Maro, which there would have come, been used as model with the Navigation of Saint-Brendan, and where the Irish monk Clémens, contemporary of Charlemagne, will compose a treaty of the parts of speech in which it inserts long extracts of Pseudo-Virgile of Toulouse.
Thereafter, a Carolingian school of rhetoric exists with the Saint-Sernin cloister until XIIe century, and another is created with the Saint-Etienne cathedral in XIe century. They ensure the training of the clerks necessary to the administration comtale and episcopal, without being an important intellectual hearth. Between 1215 and 1217, theologists external to Toulouse come to give to it courses which followed Saint-Dominique and its school-fellows.
Current Université of Toulouse has a quite precise historical origin: it was founded, with intiative of the cardinal Romain of Saint-Angels, pursuant to the Traité of Meaux-Paris passed in 1229 between Raymond VII of Toulouse, count de Toulouse, and the Louis IX, king de France, to put an end to the civil war due to the heresy cathare. The pope Gregoire IX gives him the same organization and the same privileges as the Université of Paris which had just been founded (between 1219 and 1231).
Among the founders one can also name the bishop Foulques of Toulouse. The first professors are, inter alia, Jean de Garlande there, which write in 1229 a leaflet of the studies calling the miters and the schoolboys of North to come to study, and Roland de Crémone. The studies comprise the general studium , i.e. the liberal arts and theology, and, right from the start, the juice ubic docendi , i.e. the right.
Teaching is made by Masters coming from other cities, and by the Preaching friars which undertake in 1230 the construction of the church and the cloister of the Couvent of the Jacobins (Toulouse) where the University of Toulouse will hold, during several centuries, its meetings and its assemblies. It coplète its organization by giving general statuses into 1311,1313 and 1314, and particular statuses for the faculty of Arts in 1309, that of Right in 1314, that of Theology into 1366,1374,1380 and 1389. A teaching of Medicine was given within the faculty of Arts, and became an independent faculty only at the 15th century.
The pope authorizes the Dominican ones to transfer to Toulouse the body from Thomas d' Aquin, philosopher of the school scholastic which had proposed a synthesis between profane letters and crowned letters, the thought of Aristote and the Bible, and proposed to articulate the reason and the faith.
