The university of Nantes is the second French university by the number of its students (after the Université Paris I). In 2005-2006 there is a little more: 33000 registered students. The university counted more: 35000 students certain years.

Departments

The attached personnel includes/understands close to: 3000 people (teacher-researchers and administrative staffs and techniques for which it is necessary to add the clean personnel of the great research organizations like CNRS and the INSERM).

The university of Nantes includes/understands 20 internal components: UFR, institutes and schools mainly located at Nantes but also at the Roche-sur-Yon and Saint-Nazaire.

History

The university of Nantes is founded by Bertrand Milon the April 4th 1460, on the initiative of François II, duke of Brittany, and this by a pontifical Bulle of the pope Pie II, given to His. Created in the form of a general studium the university can teach all the disciplines: theology, canon law, civil law, medicine and arts. The Faculty of Law is transferred to Rennes, in October 1735, on decision of the king. The Revolution signs the end of the universities of Ancien Mode. The university of Nantes is closed in August 1793. Certain schools replace it however, the Médecine, in particular, will continue to be taught in Nantes and later the right and the letters.

A decree of December 29th, 1961 institutes a university in Nantes. In 1962, three new faculties (sciences, letters, right) are installed on the campus of the edges of the Erdre on the fields of the Hillock and Lombarderie recently acquired by the town of Nantes. In May 1961, Michel Debré, Prime Minister comes to pose the first stone of the Faculty of Science in the presence of the mayor of the city Henri Orrion. The law Faure which makes following the events of May 1968 organizes faculties in " Units of Teaching and Recherche" within the new university public corporations from now on autonomous. In 1970, the statutes of the university of Nantes are adopted: they mention 6 literary UER, 5 scientific UER, the UER of right, economic scenes, business management, medicine, pharmacy and odontology. Today the university of Nantes counts 20 components, divided into UFR, Instituts and a university Polytechnic school.

Yves Lecointe (technology) was elected president of the university in March 2007.

Student trade unions

There exist many student trade unions on the university:
  • the Unef, majority since the reunification of both Unef (2001).
  • South-Student, created in 2003 and particularly credit.
  • the Plain , presents primarily in right, which is not presented in the form of a trade union but an organization coed.
  • CNT since the re-entry 2006.
  • the C, also present since September 2006, little activates since the re-entry 2007.
The majority of associations of dies are members or close to the Fage. They are gathered under Feden (Federation of the Students of Nantes).

The university of Nantes is a true pole as regards militancy, in particular by the strong activity of certain organizations on its campuses.

However, in addition to trade unions or organizations with political character, there also exists of many associations with cultural vocation.
