University of Caen Basse-Normandie

The university of Caen , whose current complete name is university of Caen Basse-Normandie , is a French Université , based with Caen (Calvados). It is the only university of the area, this is why it is multidisciplinary. : 24000 students are registered there, including 22.000 on the Caen-native sites.

It gathers 11 faculties or units of formation and research (UFR): UFR of right and political sciences, UFR of economic scenes and management, UFR of social sciences, UFR of foreign living languages, UFR of history, UFR of geography, UFR of medicine, UFR of sciences pharmaceutical, UFR of sciences and technology of the physical-activities and sporting, UFR of sciences, UFR of psychology.

It also includes/understands a Institut of preparation to the general administration, a Institut of administration of the companies, an Institute of biology fundamental and applied and a school of engineer.

History

The catch of the town of Caen by the king Henri V having involved the destruction or the abandonment of the preceding education institutions, it was satisfied to establish there schools of theology and right. It is under his/her son Henri VI, duke of Normandy, that the duke of Bedford founded the university of Caen in 1432 to reconcile the population. The granted letters patent the previous year equipped it only with canonical Faculty of Law and civil law but faculties of arts, medicine and theology are instituted as of 1437. The statutes governing the university are given in 1439 during the solemn inauguration in the Saint-Pierre church. The armorial bearings of the university were of azure, with the arm driving of a cloud placed as a chief, the whole with the naturalness, the hand holding a money book, right and closed alongside to dextral of a flower of gold lily and to sinistral of a of the same leopard .

When it takes again the city, Charles VIII starts by removing the faculty of civil law under the pretext that there did not exist about it in the Université of Paris before raising it in 1452. The university was so grateful that it offered to burn the charters of Henri VI, which Louis XI did not allow, ordering to him even to celebrate the re-establishment of Henri VI on the throne of England of the October 30th 1470.

The university then placed its city and its province at the firmament of the knowledge, so much so that when the king Louis XIV made publish the list of the authors AD usum delphini , whose idea returns to the Resident of Caen P. - D. Huet, the town of Caen only provides to it more men able to work there than of the whole provinces.

The university had several colleges in the city, the college of the Mount , the college of Wood , the college of the Nailsmith , (1452 - 1731) and the college of Arts . The July 7th 1944, one month after the Unloading of Normandy, at the time of the Battle of Caen, a British air raid (the “Charnwood operation”), saw in the forty minutes space the dropping of: 2500 tons of explosive bombs which destroyed the buildings of the university.

The rebuilding of the university was spread out 1948 with 1957. To mark the painful memory of 1944, the university chose like symbol the Phoenix of mythology, because of its capacity to reappear of its ashes. The fabulous bird from now on is reproduced in an omnipresent stylized logo.

The university of Caen, like much of its equivalent, knew very a strong growth since the inauguration of its new buildings in June 1957. It passed from: 4000 students with approximately: 25000 in 2005.

Others

The university received in legacy, in 1942, the model out of plaster of the plan of Rome (after J. - C.) that the architect Paul Bigot (1870-1942) spent several decades of his life to be polished. This model, of a surface of approximately 70 m ² (11 m X 6 m, realized on scale 1/400), protected by the Historic buildings, is exposed since 1995 in the buildings of the House of research in social sciences, in Caen. The data-processing techniques give place to a virtual reconstitution of which part of work (images and vidéos of synthesis) are visible on the site of the university.
