University Cork College - National University off Ireland, Cork - or more commonly University College Cork ( UCC ) - (in Irish Coláiste Na hOllscoile Corcaigh ) is a Irish university founded in 1845 with Cork under the name of Queen' S College, Cork . Its current name was allotted to him in 1908.

It was indicated " Irish University off the year" by Sunday Times in 2003-2004 and 2005-2006.

Its president is since February 2007 Doctor Michael B. Murphy, directing in the past of the medical college of UCC.

History

It is within the framework of the law for the " progès of teaching in Irlande" ( " Advancement off Learning in Ireland" ) that the queen Victoria founded in 1845 Queen' S College, Cork . The university opened in 1849, strong of 23 professors and 181 students.

The site chosen for the university is highly symbolic system because it corresponds to the supposed site of the monastery and the school founded by Finbarr, patron saint of the town of Cork. The currency of the university " Where Finbarr taught, which Munster apprenne" reflect this bond (the Munster being the province of Ireland where Cork is located). A statue of Saint Finbarr is drawn up besides on the roof of the principal building of UCC.

It is on this site, a hill located along the Southern arm of the Lee river, that the architects Deane and Woodward built the " Quadrangle" hand; and first buildings of the university, in Gothic style Tudor.

With the passing of years, the university built a reputation of excellence in many fields, of which mathematics and medicine.

The buildings of the medical college were built gradually between 1860 and 1880 and the quality of its students was recognized quickly. The first two graduate women of medicine in Ireland were it with UCC in 1898 (more than 20 years before the studies of medicine are authorized with the women at the university of Oxford for example).

In 1908, l'" Irish Universities Act" created the group of the " National universities of Irlande" , composed of the universities of Dublin, Cork and Galway. It is at this time that Queen' S College, Cork was famous University College Cork .

Organization of the university

Today University College Cork is a dynamic university accommodating more than 17.000 students, including 14.000 " undergraduate" (student preparing the baccalaureat), framed by a personnel of more than 2.500 people (divided into approximately 1.100 not-academic personnel, 710 researchers or doctorands and 760 members of the teaching body).

The university is a major research institute in Ireland.

It offers more than 120 specializations and professional programs, distributed in 4 " colleges" (faculties), divided into 27 departments. These four faculties are:

  • Arts, Social Celtic Studies and Sciences - Celtic Arts, studies and social sciences

The university accommodates each year more than 2.000 international students, come from 76 countries and proposes with some its students to carry out one year of study abroad.

Campus

The number of student increased considerably since the end of the year 1980, accelerating the expansion of the campus by the acquisition of buildings and adjacent grounds. This expansion continues at present to meet the needs for the students. One can quote in particular the construction of the O' Rahilly Building , of a new building for the faculty of pharmacy, of the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex for all the formations related to medicine, of the extension of Aras Na MacLéinn - Devere Hall (also called Student Center ) and of that of the library ( Boole Library ), which must finish in June 2007. A new building is also in construction on old the ground of races of greyhounds, on Western Road. It will shelter buildings intended for the departments of data processing and mathematics in particular.

A gallery of exposure, the Lewis Glucksman Gallery was built close to the entry of the university at the time of the year 2005 when Cork was European Capitale of the culture. Its daring architecture, a broad part of the building not having a support on the ground, is the work of O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects. It bears the name of the principal patron of the building: Lewis Glucksman, an officiating financier with Wall Street. Exposures temportaires occupy the 23.000 m ² of exposures of the gallery. The entry in is free.

The Crawford Observatory , built in 1878 and recently renovated, is also one of the pride of the university. It was carried out by Howard Grubb, a famous manufacturer of telescopes, who drew the building and the instruments that it shelters.

A church, the Honan Chapel , is built on the campus. It was devoted in 1916 and bears the name of its principal patrons, of the family Honan, commercial rich person of Cork. The architectural style is a mixture but one recognizes a hiberno-romantic inspiration of the Middle Ages there. The vault shelters many works of art and its ground is covered with mosaics, representing the topic cnt in favor of the Christian unit. Contemporary artists also intervened within the vault and one finds in particular a furnace bridge out of modern wooden of invoice. Only the " graduated" of UCC can claim to marry in the vault, which is very appraisal for these occasions. The incomes of these marriages make it possible Honan Chapel to be independent financially.

Famous graduates and professors

  • George Boole, first mathematics professor of UCC. It created the Boolean Algèbre which made possible the programming information. The library of UCC bears its name.
  • Jack Lynch, graduate, fourth Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Irish Republic
  • Fiona Shaw, graduate, actress
  • Micheal Martin, graduate, politician
  • Of Bishop, graduate, actor
  • Cillian Murphy, who attended the university without in being graduate, actor and musician

Polemic

A polemic was formed in 2006 when Desmond Clark, a professor of UCC showed the direction of financial management and devices of intimidation bad. He claimed an independent survey on the management of the university, which is currently in hand.
