United States Northern Command

The United States Northern Command - NORTHCOM is one of the eleven Unified Combattant Command depend on the Department of Defense of the United States (DoD).

Mission

Created on October 1st 2002, its mission is to protect the territory from the the United States and to bring a support to the local authorities, States of the United States or federal.

Manpower

United States Northern Command has a manpower of about 1200 people, soldiers and civil, of which little of them is affected in a permanent way. To fulfill its mission, it can call upon all the branches of the Armed forces of the United States.

Localization

The chief of United States Northern Command is at the same time chief of the Custom-Canadian North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) which is based both with Peterson Air Force Bases with Colorado Springs, Colorado which will receive from here 2008 part of the activities of Cheyenne Mountain.

Geographical area

The NORTHCOM exerts its responsibilities on most of the North America, border of the Mexico with its neighbors of Central America to the Arctic territories of the Canada. The Alaska, however, is divided between the NORTHCOM and the United States Pacific Command while the Greenland is divided between the NORTHCOM and the United States European Command. Hawaii is only under the jurisdiction of PACOM.

It should be noted that Canada does not accept the interference of the NORTHCOM on the Canadian territory, in term of responsibility and safety, reducing of as much their national sovereignty. Mexico does not form part of this new military organization.
