Unified socialist party of Germany

The Socialist party unified of Germany ( of Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands , SED) was the main thing Political party of the German Democratic republic (GDR).

Resulting from the forced fusion of the social democrat Party (SPD) and of the Communist party (KPD) in 1946, it was the party of the East-German capacity, its prevalence having even been registered in the constitution of 1968. Famous Left democratic socialism ( of Partei DER demokratischen Sozialismus , PDS) in 1989, it continued its activities after the Réunification while positioning with the left of the SPD, and amalgamated in 2007 with a party of the West of the country to form Die Linke.

List leaders

The first secretary (1953-1976) or general secretary (1950-1953 and 1976-1989) of the central committee of the SED was the true holder of the capacity in GDR:
  • July 24th, 1950: Walter Ulbricht becomes takes the head of the SED. With died of the president of the Republic Wilhelm Pieck, the presidency of the Republic is transformed into a collegial body, the Council of State, whose Ulbricht becomes the first president.
  • May 3rd, 1971: Erich Honecker replaces Ulbricht with the head of the party.
  • October 18th, 1989: Honecker, dismissed, is replaced by Egon Krenz.
  • Krenz loses its station on December 3rd, 1989.
