Ulsan

Ulsan (in Hangul 울산광역시, in Hanja 蔚山廣域市) is a port city located at the south-east of the South Korea on the sea of the East (also called sea of Japan). The city counts: 962931 inhabitants (2000) and the metropolitan city (with the suburbs): 1105823 inhabitants (2005). The city has the statute of metropolitan city since July 15th, 1997.

Economy

The saving in Ulsan is based on activities of Naval construction, Métallurgie and Pétrochimie. The city also produces Améthyste S. It gathers 12  % of the national industrial production.

Ulsan is the cradle of Hyundai with two important subsidiary companies: Heavy Industry for the construction of large boats (approximately: 50000 employees) and Automotive for automotive engineering (approximately: 48000 employees).

Transport

The airport of Ulsan serves the towns of Seoul and Jeju. Korean Air and Asiana uses this airport.

Infrastructures

The stage of Ulsan (more precisely, the Munsu Football Stadium ) was one of the official sites of the football world cup of 2002. It accommodates the matches of the local team of the Tigres of Ulsan.

The city has two large city parks inaugurated for the world cup of 2002: that of Munsu around the stage of the same name and that of the center located between the round not of the industrial tower and the town hall of the district of Ulju-gun. This last comprises an artificial lake, a swimming pool and a small animalist park. Two principal department stores are present (Hyundai Department Store and Lotte Department Store) as well as cinematographic complexes.

The city has a university located in the district of Mugeo-dong.

Geography

The river Taehwa crosses the city.

Culture

Ulsan is famous for its beaches, of which that of Jugeon, consisted of Galet S blacks.

July 15th, 1997, the town of Ulsan obtains the statute metropolitan city following its detachment of the province of the Gyeongsang of the South.

Ulsan comprises four districts ( gu ) and a county ( gun ).
