Uchaud

Uchaud is a Commune Frenchwoman, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Geography

History

The name of the village comes from the deformation of the inscription engraved on the milliary Borne still visible nowadays which marked out the Voie Domitienne at this place: " AD OCTAVUM LAPIDUM" , " with the eighth pierre".

Octavum became " Uchaud".

In 1384, the Tuchins are crushed in Uchaud by the duke of Berry.

Personalities related to the commune

Robert of Jolly lived the commune of Uchaud: inventor of modern speleology, it worked as engineer with the Perrier source. Its residence is an imposing masonry in a park located beside the town hall. The old main road crossing the village is called henceforth which occurred Robert of Jolly.
