Turanga Leela

Turanga Leela , often indicated simply under the name of Leela , is a cyclops and one of the main characters of the Televised series of Science-fiction Futurama . In the series, it is the captain of the vessel of delivery " Planet Express".

Origin of its name

" Leela" is regarded as its first name and " Turanga" like its family name, because his/her parents name " Turanga Morris" and " Turunga Munda". Its culture emploit, for its name, " the order oriental" , i.e. that the name precedes the first name. Its name could also inspired of work for orchestra " Turangalîla-Symphony " , written by French Olivier Messiaen. The title of the piece is derived from two words of Sanskrit, " turanga and lîla" , the unit meaning " literally; the love song and the anthem of the joy, time, the movement, the rate/rhythm, the life, and the mort". In the beginning, its family name was not known; one can thus think that it is a posterior idea of the scenario writers.

Lila meaning purple in Spanish, Swedish, Hungarian, Finnish, German etc, his name could be inspired by its color of hair, or vice versa. " Leela" can also be a homage to one of the companions of the Doctor Who, also called Leela, because the creator of Futurama, Matt Groening, is a fan of this series of Science-fiction.

Biography

Leela is a Cyclops of mutant origin and only the cyclops of the known universe. It was born in the old sewers from New York, in a company of mutants which have prohibition to mix with human the " normaux" because of their genetic anomalies. Leela being " the mutant one having the smallest change never observé" - its single eye being the only difference between it and human normal - his/her parents decided to give up it and entrust it to Orphenarium (orphanage) of Cookieville to save to him a difficult life in the sewers. Munda, the mother of Leela, had joined to the covers of his/her daughter a note written in extaterrestre to make it pass for a alien. This word said " Your parents who love you very fort". Child, it learned how to fight to defend against the mockeries repeated from the other children of the orphelinarium in connection with his single eye. Teenager, Leela involved herself with martial arts in l'" Arcturan Kung-Fu" , succeeding in spite of the Misogynie of its professor which thinks that " only the men can have the spirit of the guerrier".

As an adult, Leela could be regarded as a woman very attracting, if one excludes that it has only one eye, the apparent reason of his lack of experiment in love (although Fry rather prefers it with its single eye than with two (cf " the orphans ")). Leela initially worked in the cryogenic center where it met Fry for the 1st time, but it gave up its work of officer of attribution of destiny to go to work as pilot at Planet Express . It is physically very strong, but its single eye makes that it has a defect of perception. Amy Wong seems to carry similar, but the smaller; although one ever saw it to make use of it.

Leela is also known to have a very nosy personality. This small defect appears in fact often positive, because its tendency to interfere itself with businesses Fry often saves the life of this last.

Intelligent and authoritative, it has much character. With the five season old wire, one learns that its character is more complex than it does not appear to with it. It is less strong and understanding that one could not believe it and it bends on certain principles which strictly govern its life for more colors and of love of life (as in the episode " freed from God " where fault of making change Fry of opinion, it prefers to follow " the way of the folie"). Its choices in the life are still not certain and in this case she plays them pile or face!

Leela adores its small “animal” of company, Nibbler, which it found on Vergon 6 in the episode " Victim of the love lost in space " (in VO Love' S Lost Ploughings in Space).

Lastly, Leela would have biological children with Kif Kroker (cf the episode " Kiff and Punchinello in the drawer ").

Social life and in love

Leela is meant well with his/her colleagues, even if it can be jealous of Amy Wong (and reciprocally). It is very close to Fry and its friend Bender.

Leela brushed in certain episodes the portrait of the ideal man. This last must rely on him, have less than 5 eyes and to have a certain musical talent. A politician would be also welcome. The love life of Leela is in the middle of certain episodes, and is one of the engines of the series. Its two principal applicants are Fry and Zapp Brannigan.

Philip J. Fry

Although it and Fry shared several intimate moments during the series, this one still does not have succeeds in convincing it that he is the ideal man. Several episodes turn around their relation:

*Durant cruising on Titanic in the episode Titanic 2 , Fry is made pass for the boyfriend of Leela to save it advances of Zapp Brannigan. It was also presented in the form of a boyfriend of Amy Wong, which made Leela jealous… Fry declares to him then which them relation is much more important than that it maintains with Amy.

*Fry buys a gift (a parrot) be sorry Leela of its behavior in the episode Contes of Christmas , but they are taken in hunting by the Robot Father Christmas which wants to kill them. They are close being embraced because they are under a branch of GUI, but the Father Christmas does not leave them time of them.

For the knowledge, they débarassent worms and becomes again stupid and awkward, so much so that Leela, lends to push their relation a little further, gets rid of it.

Several of the episodes seem to indicate that Fry and Leela would end up being put really together, being given their relation in the any last season where they become appreciably closer.

Zapp Brannigan

Leela makes its knowledge in the episode Victime of the love lost in space . Leela, Fry and Bender are found on the spaceship " Nimbus" where they meet celebrates it captain Zapp Brannigan. Alcazar and others

Alcazar

In the episode the marriage of Leela ; Leela had a short relation with a " homme" called Alcazar, which had been presented as being existing the cyclops last in the universe, without counting Leela. After allurehaving allured it, while telling him in particular that their marriage was the only way of preserving the race of the cyclops, Alcazar changed behavior and became hard and macho. Fry, which had suspected it since the beginning, stops the ceremony of marriage by bringing with him the four other women whom Don Juan had envisaged to marry. Alcazar, which can be metamorphosed at will, tries to mislead them, but is finally obliged to acknowledge that he wanted to marry five women so that they clean her five castles…

Their history is a parody of the American televised series Mariés, two children in whom ED O' Neill and Katey Sagal held the first roles. Leela is even represented with the typical appearance of Peggy, and is addressed to Alcazar by calling it " Aaaallll" , like Peggy with his/her husband Al Bundy. The name d'" Alcazar" made reference in the name of the royal castle of Seville, " Alcázar". The history distorts which Alcazar tells on the cyclops, including that of the brilliant scientist who sends a child on Earth to save it, refers to Superman.
