Tunnel of the Northern Cape
The tunnel of the Northern Cape (Norwegian Nordkapptunnelen) is an underwater road tunnel located under Magerøysundet and connecting to the continent the island Magerøya. The tunnel built between 1993 and 1999, measurement 6.875 meters length and reached depth a 212 meters below the sea level. Before the tunnel was built, a vat ensured the connection between Kåfjord and Honningsvåg. The tunnel of the Northern Cape belongs to the European Route E69.
The tunnel has doors antifreeze. The doors close the entries of the tunnel in winter to prevent that the surface water does not freeze. These doors open automatically when the cars approach and are open in a permanent way in summer (with a denser traffic).
