Trzebnica

Trzebnica (in German Trebnitz ) is a Ville of Poland which counts 12.229 inhabitants (2001). It is the Chef-lieu of a district ( powiat ) of the Voïvodie of Low-Silesia.

Geographical location

The city is located at the south-west of the Poland, to 24 km in the north of Wrocław. It is with a Altitude of 179 Mr.

History

The archaeological excavations showed that the site was already inhabited at the 5th century. At the 12th century, Trzebnica is a place of Marché S, a locality belonging to Piotr Włostowic. At the end of the 12th century, it belongs to the grounds of the Duc S Piasts of Silesia. In 1202, Henri Ier Bearded the and his wife Hedwige found a church and a Monastère which accommodate the following year of the Cisterciens come from Bamberg. The monastery of Trzebnica is the first in Poland has to accommodate nuns. Construction is completed in 1218. The monastery becomes the center of the religious life , cultural and economic, supporting the development of Trzebnica which increases and receives the urban Privilège S in 1250.

At the 14th century, Trzebnica is found in the Frontière S of the Duché of Oleśnica, duchy which becomes a Fief of the Bohemia. The Culte of Sainte Hedwige of Silesia develops. War S, plunderings and epidemic S slow down the rise of the city. At the 15th century, the Hussite S seize the city and the monastery (1432/1433), then the army of Mathias Corvin (1474). The city knows also two epidemics of Peste.

At the 16th century, Trzebnica starts to become a place of Pèlerinage. In 1526, the Silesia passes in the field of the Habsbourg and the city takes again its development. In 1605, a first town hall in Bois is built. The city is devastated and périclite during the Guerre Thirty Year old (1618 - 1648). The city is rebuilt in the second part of the 17th century. A new town hall is set up in 1730. In 1740, the Prussia seizes the city for two centuries. Epidemics, wars and confiscation of the goods of the city cause a new decline. The Prussian authorities close the monastery in 1810. The Ordre of Malta repurchases the building in 1870 and transforms it into Hôpital Militaire. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city makes new great strides (Banque, Bibliothèque, Imprimerie, construction of schools, local newspapers). The local microclimate induced the appearance of convalescent homes. Starting from 1886, a railway line connects the city to Wrocław.

The Red Army seizes a destroyed city with 75% the January 25th 1945. The city becomes Polish and is rebuilt.

Economy

Trzebnica specialized in the linked activities with the Health care with many centers of convalescence which settled in a city re-elected for its microclimate and its Eau.

The city is also a tourist center important and attracts many pilgrims what contributed to the development of the Hôtel lery and the restoration.
