Trinquetaille
Trinquetaille is a district of Arles, located in the Canton of Arles-West
It was particularly developed in Antiquity, because of its port activities. Its name appears in many old texts, the consuls of Arles being lords of Trinquetaille.
Geography
The district of Trinquetaille is located on Right Bank of the large Rhone. By this positioning, at the point of the Delta, Trinquetaille is located in the Camargue.
Etymology
The name Trinquetaille would come from the sailors who formerly, when it made a halt in the district, went in inns for drinking ( to clink glasses into of Provence). After each glass, they carried out a notch in one of the walls of the establishment. It is the association of these two actions: to clink glasses and to cut which would have given its name to the district.
