Treaty of Pangkor
The treated of Pangkor was signed the January 20th 1874 between the the United Kingdom and the applicant with the throne of Perak, the prince Rajah Ismail, on the island of Pangkor to broad of Perak.
In 1871 the Ali sultan dies, leaving three wire, princes Abdullah, Ismail and Yusuf. According to the complex system of succession of Perak, it is Abdullah which should have been named its successor, but it is Ismail which is elected. At the same time, two Chinese secret societies, Hai San clan and Ghee Hin, fought for the control of the tin mines, an industry in full rise thanks to the important layers of Perak.
Abdullah calls upon the British assistance then to solve these two problems. The English seize this occasion to extend their influence in Southeast Asia and to reinforce their monopoly on tin. In 1874, a conference is organized in Pangkor, which is concluded by the signature from a treaty by which Abdullah is indicated sultan of Perak and J.W.W Birch first resident British in this Malayan state.
The treaty of Pangkor formally marks the beginning of the British intervention in the businesses of the States of the Malayan Péninsule.
