A voyage is a Déplacement carried out towards a more or less distant point with a personal aim (Tourisme) or professional (Affaires). The voyage considerably developed and democratized, during the 20th century with the advent of means of transport modern and in rapids and comfortable, the Railroad initially, then the Automobile and the Avion.

A circular voyage which brings back the traveller to his starting point is a “tour”.

The people who travel are called “travellers”, or in some means of “momentary” transport.

Historically moved by practical reasons (trade, exploration,…), the voyage changes with the XIX° century with the arrival of the Touriste (" the idiot of the voyage" as calls it without spite Jean-Didier Urbain), which moves for its pleasure.

The motivations become from there more complex and plunge their roots in the History and the myths maintained by the literature (Marco Polo, Jules Verne, Robinson Crusoé,…). This literature of the adventure develops besides strongly with the XIX° century.

However, at the same time as the world " rétrécit" under the effect of the speed of transport, its identification in various forms (cartography, images, information,…) increases, leaving less place to surprised of the traveller. Marc Augé speaks thus about the impossible voyage, “that which we will never do again, that which could have made us discover new landscapes and other men”.

Currently, the extension of the voyages poses the problem of the Tourisme responsible like that for the Climate change, transport being one of the principal persons in charge of the gas emission with greenhouse effects and in addition in continuous increase.
