Trainspotting

Trainspotting is a Scottish film carried out by Danny Boyle in 1996.

Synopsis

Trainspotting describes the tragi-comic life of a group of marginal young people, accros with the Héroïne, in the town of Edinburgh. With unemployment like the majority of young people the Scot of its generation, Mark Renton trails in the suburbs of Edinburgh with his/her buddies Sick Boy (a film enthusiast ladykiller of girls), Spud (a nice cretin), Begbie (dangerous excentric always seeking the brawl) and Tommy (a follower of the musculation). To mislead their trouble, they steal, swindle and take heroin, except Begbie (which stick to alcohol) and Tommy (which does not touch with nothing and carries out a healthy life). Between a meeting of drug in the cave of the Swanney dealer and an attempt at unhooking thanks to suppositories with morphine provided by Mikey (another trafficker), Renton courts Diane, a délurée schoolgirl resulting from a very middle-class medium. Renton (Ewan McGregor), with the wire of its attempts to take down, poses a lucid glance on its condition of drug addict and the forfeiture of its group of friends.

The original soundtrack of film had a great success, about the same one as film, with songs of Lou Reed ( Perfect Day ), Iggy Pop ( Lust for Life ), Blur ( Sing ), Pulp, etc

Analyzes

The characters, very well defined, with clean characters, have the same idea however: to escape by drug from the company, its rules, each one with its manner. They refuse to be integrated not to yield to the universal model. This aversion is clearly shown by the image of the parents of Renton, carrying out a sordid life and baffrant themselves of emissions of entertainment in their poor housing. " To choose the life, to choose a job, to choose a career, to choose a family, to choose a whore of TV to the idiot, to choose washing machines, motors, platinums laser, can-openers electronic, to choose health, a cholesterol low level and a good mutual insurance company, to choose the loans atfixed rate, to choose its small house, to choose his/her friends, to choose his survet' and the bag which goes with, to choose its settee with the two armchairs, the whole with credit with a choice of fabric of shit, to choose to arrange Sunday morning while wondering about the direction of its life, to choose to lower itself on this whore of settee, and lobotomiser with the tele plays while stuffing oneself of MacDo, to choose to rot with the old people's home and to finish while pissing oneself above in misery by realizing that one makes shame with the screwed children of the head which one laid so that they take over, to choose his future, to choose the life. Why I would make a similar thing? I chose not to choose the life. I chose another thing. Reasons? Y' does not have reason. One does not need reasons when one with the héroïne."

But the film has a more political range. The action proceeds in Scotland, a country in margin of England, and which nourishes a form of complex vis-a-vis its neighbor. While renonçant with the life, like the known as Mark at the beginning of film, the characters give up showing that they exist, that their opinion counts as much as that of the others; they adopt the ostrich policy and evolve/move in an imaginary world where there are no precise rules. They thus follow the diagram of Scotland which, wearied to fight, lowered the arms and agreed to become an outlying area of England. Whereas they refuse to live the life of the Scot of the years 1980, plunged into full in the financial crisis and unemployment, they build a quite worse life, more dangerous, but more attractive in their eyes. Thus Renton and Spud help themselves to scuttle their talks of recruiting, going there not to lose the monthly check which is allocated to them, but being arranged to say nonsenses which will make them readjust in all the cases. There still one is in full contradiction, these young people refuse the life and the company such as it is, but despite everything they require for it to survive because they were accustomed to assisted beings and that they cannot only be assumed all. However it is exactly the case of Scotland: she wishes her independence, but because that made of the centuries that she is controlled by the English, she is unable to be assumed all alone, not knowing at the bottom not how to be caught there. Then she rebels with her way, pushes the masses with the revolution, to be opposed to the external authorities which are legal authorities.

From where, suddenly, in full quietude, this heartfelt cry of Renton: “But it is a punishment to be Écossais! One is null of null! The reject of humanity! The Scottish people it is the shit, most controlled most pitiful which ever was hell of a lot of since the ground exists! Here the majority of people hate the English, I regret they are only jerks. Whereas we one is colonized by jerks. One was not able to be colonized by a higher race. One is controlled by brushes with john. It is the asshole of the world this Tommy country, and your fresh air and your big spaces they cannot anything, it was foutu in advance! ”

The entire film returns to the heroin which the main characters consume. Indeed the assembly is carried out so as to follow the rate/rhythm of a " trip" with its very fast and intense departure then an alternation of rather slow scenes leading to other assembled scenes in a very jerked way, with the image of the alternation of periods when Renton " plane" and of periods when it is in lack.

Anecdotes

  • the term “ trainspotting ” comes at the origin from the activity from the railwaymen, bachelors and désœuvrés, who counted the departures of trains, in the Eighties. By extension, that nominates a person obsessed by something of unimportant, and in particular by drug.
