Origins
The song was written in one night and was recorded the next day, at the any end of the recording studio of the album London Calling . It was with the expected departure that it is offered in promotional gift with the British magazine of rock'n'roll New Musical Express train . But as Mick Jones commented on it: They is a little too good to give it free with the NME. , the Clash finally decided to add it on their own album.
The result of this late addition was that it was the only song without words printed on the booklet, and did not appear on the list of the titles.
With the departure thus, not referred on the " track list" , the title seemed to be a hidden Chanson at the end of the album. However, Bill Price, manager and engineer of Wessex Studios, pointed out that Train in Vain was the last song which we finished after the small pocket had left for printing works .
Often described like a hidden song, it thus proves that was not intentional at the beginning.

Train in Vain is a love song, with almost words " country and western" who point out traditional Tammy Wynette, Stand By Your Man . Musicalement, of the parts resemble But It' S Alright , the American tube of 1966 of J.J. Jackson.
The singer Joe Strummer said: I bathed in the blues and the English R&B as a teenager, then I went in the American black R&B with my group The 101 ' ers. Mick had listened to a heap of tricks also, and it had this additional dimension of the scene glam/trash New York Dolls and Stooges
