Torres LED Rio

Torres LED Rio is a village located at the north of the Spain, comarca (canton) of “Tierra de Estella”, in the commune of Estella, of the autonomous Communauté of Navarre.

Population: 169 inhabitants in 2004.

Geography

History

Torres LED Rio, also called Torres de Sansol, existed before the Moslem invasion as the chronicles announce it, and was reconquered after the catch of Monjardín.
Its monastery was built by gift Jimeno Galíndez, abbot of the monastery of Irache in 1109.
Its suzerain Alvar Díaz de Medrano, wire of Juan Martínez de Medrano, which had bought the rights on the area, gave them in 1341 to king de Navarre, in the condition of being able to enjoy the jurisdiction of Viguera, a few years later this donation was confirmed by the king Philippe III of Navarre.
By the sentence of the king Louis XI of France, in the conflicts which opposed Henri IV Castille and Juan II of Aragon, Torres LED Rio was annexed by Castille downtown 1463, just like Los Arcos and surrounding.

The Pilgrimage of Compostelle

On the Camino frances of the Pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle.
One comes from Los Arcos, the next commune is Viana, the church Santa Maria and the Hermitage Nuestra Séñora del Poyo.

In the Guide of the Pilgrim, Aimery Picaud calls it “ Turres ” where “ runs a river which gives death to the horses and with the men who drink water of it.

Monk

It, which belonged to the canons of this name, is one of the most singular monuments of the way and one of the best examples of the late novel in Navarre. Its principal originality, apart from its octagonal plan, lies in the influences which it underwent on behalf of the Muslim art of Spain. Thus are explained in particular the presence of the veins which intersect under its cupola, that support of large rectangular warheads.
The roof is surmounted by an octagonal skylight which shone in the night, evoking those of the minarets, and which was used formerly as lantern of deaths. One reaches the skylight by a turret joined in the west, while in the east the semicircular bedside of the apsidal chapel, arched swells in bottom of furnace. Inside, the vertical lines dominate, the splendid star cupola, of mudéjar influence, are of a perfect geometry, and resemble those of the church Holy-Cross to Oloron-Holy-Marie and of the Hospital-Saint-Blaise, on the slope français.
The splendid windows laid out at the end of the branches of star, let us modillons them and historiés capitals are the only decorative elements. The plan and the implementation of this building leave think that construction, the conditions, was the fact is of an important character of XIIe century or Templiers. Beautiful capitals and a Christ hiératique.
Its resemblance to the vault of Eunate and that of Sancti Spiritus of Roncevaux struck the specialists who see a funerary vault there because it preserved its lantern of deaths.

Rebuilt at the XVIIIe century, the vault Nuestra Señora del Poyo (Notre Dame of Puy), perched high on its view-point, was announced by pilgrims to XIIe, XIIIe, and XVe centuries.
