Tom Barrasso

Thomas Patrick Barrasso (born the March 31st 1965 with Boston in the Massachusetts) was a professional player of American Hockey, goalkeeper who played 18 seasons of the National league of hockey for the Sabers of Buffalo, the Penguins de Pittsburgh, the Senators d' Ottawa, the Hurricanes of the Caroline, the Maple Leafs of Toronto and the Blues of Saint-Louis.

Career LNH

Tom Barrasso grew in the town of Acton in the Massachusetts and it started to play hockey on a skating rink in outside. As of its 4 years he played with aims then as a teenager he was regarded as one of the best American hopes with aims of all times.

He was chosen by the Sabers of Buffalo as a 5th choice of the Repêchage of entry in the LNH 1983 (becoming thus the selected guard earliest in the fishing out of all times - it was necessary to await 1997 and Roberto Luongo to see a guard chosen as a 4th choice).

As of its first season LNH, Barrasso gained at the same time the Trophée Calder and the Trophée Vézina, becoming the 3rd player of the history of the LNH has to realize doubled during the same season.

Called " Tomcat" , it was selected with the American team for the Coupe of Canada at the 19 years age in 1984. It also formed part of the selection for the Championnat of the world of hockey in 1986 and for the Coupe of Canada in 1987.

In 1988, Barrasso passed from the Sabers to the Penguins de Pittsburgh where it joined Mario Lemieux and gains two Coupes Stanley in 1991 and in 1992. Its extraordinary performances during the final stages of the Stanley Cut showed that he was a guard of exception, a guard who really weighed within the team when this one needed it most.

Wounded major the part of time, Barrasso missed the majority by the seasons 1994-95 and 1995-96. It succeeds in nevertheless returning from wounds on a very good level and thus during the season 1996-97, he becomes the first American guard to exceed the symbolic mark of the 300 victories in LNH.

In its last seasons within Penguins, the relations between Barrasso and the local press became tended and the guard made the decision not to speak more with the press which it missed respect like with his family. This episode tarnishes to him its image within the community of Pittsburgh.

In March 2000, Tomcat leaves Pittsburgh to go to play at the Senators d' Ottawa where after a defeat during the 7th match of the eliminatory Séries, it sends packing the journalists. This annoying incident is worth to him to remain on the bench all the season 2000-01 then to have to leave the Senators. It thus joined the Hurricanes of the Caroline for the season 2001-02 but because of recurring wounds Barrasso never finds its play even if it nevertheless takes part in the conquest of the money medal during the XIX {{exp|be}} Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City (the United States).

Before withdrawing LNH in 2003, it joined the Blues of Saint-Louis.

He is now the director of the development of the goalkeepers at the Hurricanes of the Caroline.

Others

Barrasso was the only member of the team of the Penguins de Pittsburgh which refused with the realizers of the film Sudden death with Jean-Claude Van Damme in 1995, the use of its name in film.
