Toba (emperor)

The emperor Toba (鳥羽天皇, Toba Tennō , February 24th 1103 - July 20th 1156) was the sixty-fourteenth emperor Japan, according to the traditional order of the succession, and reigned nominally of 1107 with 1123, the capacity in the facts being exerted by his grandfather, the emperor withdrawn Shirakawa. With died of this last in 1129, Toba becomes also withdrawn emperor. Its personal name was prince Munehito (宗仁).
Genealogy
Toba was the son of the emperor Horikawa. It had many children, among whom the future emperors Sutoku, Konoe and Go-Shirakawa.

Biography
With died of his/her mother, Toba is dealt with and raised by his/her grandfather the emperor withdrawn Shirakawa. At the four years age, there are crowned emperor with died of his father Horikawa, the businesses of the government remaining controlled by his grandfather. In 1123, this one forces it to abdicate in favor of his/her son Sutoku.With died of Shirakawa in 1129, Toba becomes itself withdrawn emperor, exerting the capacity through the reign of three successive emperors, Sutoku, Konoe and Go-Shirakawa. In 1142, Toba becomes monk with the temple of the Tōdai-ji under the name of Kūkaku . The same year, it forces Sutoku to withdraw throne with the profit of Konoe, then two years old only, which will be later one of the causes of the Rébellion of Hōgen which bursts with its death in 1156.
